We released TargetProcess 2.18.2 today with several fixes and cute pics  in Kanban board: visual bugs and tasks count for user stories.

This is not an ultimate health diagnostic utility for user stories, but it’s at least possible to see right away how many bugs and tasks are wrapped in in it.

People ask this question quite often as probably there’s no quick shortcut from Kanban Board/Task board to the screen where customization is done.

Now, let’s see how we can change/add states for User Stories in Kanban board. The key to customizing columns is essentially changing states for User Stories. So, here’s our Kanban board:

kanban-board-1

We’ve got 5 states for User Stories in there: Planned, In Progress, In Testing, Analysis, Done.  Let’s suppose we want to remove Analysis column and replace it with Ready to Merge Column.

We need to go to Admin-Processes, and select the Process used for our Project (Kanban process in our case). Then we go to Workflow for User Story:

workflows-for-user-story

All of our existing states for User Stories are in there. Let’s now edit the states – replace the Analysis with Ready to Merge State:

Don’t forget to click Save in the Add/Edit Entity State window, then Save Workflow.

Now let’s see what happens with the columns in our Kanban board:

Ready to Merge column is right there!

This works the same for Task Board. You need to add/edit/remove states for Tasks in Admin-Processes-Task-Workflow-Change State to customize columns in Task Board.

The year 2009 is ending, so it’s time to look back and remember the ideas that have been guiding us. One of the main features (if not the most important one) that appeared in TargetProcess in 2009 is Kanban support.

Take a look at this collection of posts in TargetProcess agile blog related to Kanban.

See how Kanban is supported in TargetProcess agile project management software: Kanban Board, Cumulative Flow Diagram, Lead and Cycle Time reports.

Just a quick overview of 2 small but nice features, new in recent builds:

Items count displayed in Kanban board columns

Take a look at the screenshot:

Now we’ve got color coding to indicate whether the count of items in a given column/state in Kanban board exceeds the allowed limit (by the way, setting limits is done in one of the grey boxes on the upper right called “Customize”.)

With red arrows on the screenshot above, we see that for In Progress column 5 items is a limit and 5 items are in progress. All OK – the color is grey — it’s about neutrality. For Coded column, we’ve got the red light — the limit is 3, and currently as many as 7 entities are in this state. With Ready to Merge column — no items are there, and the limit is 3, so we’ve got the light green color for this column. It’s almost like traffic lights :)

Ability to filter by State added to Search column.

See the screenshot:

search-filter

For example, as a Product Owner you might want to filter out all the entities in Open state based on some keyword (search string) — “effort” as in the screenshot.

In the future we’re going to implement more advanced filtering for search.  As soon as next week we will enable search in Comments fields (not only in Name and in Description), so this small update with filtering by State is our first step towards powerful search capabilities in TargetProcess.

Please, refer to our change log for the complete list of all the updates and fixes in the latest builds.

Today we’ve setup Kanban Board on 42 inches TV in the office.

Yesterday we’ve released TargetProcess v.2.15 with basic Lean / Kanban support. It includes customizable Kanban Board and Cumulative Flow Diagram. It is just a first release to provide the most important functionality.

We at TargetProcess moved away from iterations to flow. As a result, most important features like iteration planning, burn down charts, daily progress, etc. became useless to us. This situation was quite strange. We were developing agile project management software, but it lacked functionality that we needed.

We’ve tried to find viable workarounds. For example, we’ve created endless release (to emulate Planned state) and endless iteration (to emulate In Progress state). It worked, but visualization was just not there, thus violating Kanban principle. Finally we decided to implement required functionality and did it in 1 month.

New Knaban Board is fantastic. It visualizes user stories and bugs flows nicely, highlights limits, shows priorities, etc.

Next v.2.16 release will include options to switch off Iterations (if you don’t use them, they will not affect user interface), view release burn chart down by weeks, view other progress reports by release. And of course we are going to improve Kanban Board based on your feedback!
