Requires the following solutions to be installed:
- Agile Release Trains (ARTs) (edcffe31-75d3-40b8-9b16-6fbfa380466e)
It goes well with the following solution:
- Iteration Generation for Agile Release Train (ART) (5170cf26-77e6-4d16-96f3-c11a5b86f876)

Solution Overview
The solution enables the possibility to track Agile Release Train Actual, Average, and Forecasted Velocity. Agile Release Train Actual Velocity will be calculated as an effort completed in a Planning Interval, which will allow to track ART Average Velocity and understand the ART Forecasted Velocity.
The solution enables the following velocity fields and calculations for them:
- Initial Velocity and AVG PI Velocity (for an Agile Release Train)
- Velocity and Forecasted Velocity (for a Planning Interval)
Initial Velocity for an Agile Release Train
The Agile Release Train Initial Velocity field will appear on an Agile Release Train view. This field is needed when you start using the system, and there are no finished Planning Intervals yet. This field will be used to calculate Cost per Point or other important details for Costs or Capacity. Later, when the actual Velocity starts calculating, the field will be ignored.
You can set Agile Release Train Initial Velocity on an Agile Release Train view:
or on the ART and PIs Velocity view in the left menu.
Actual Velocity
Actual Planning Interval Velocity is calculated based on Effort Completed in a Planning Interval. Right after solution installation, the Copy EffortCompleted to Velocity for PI (Release) metric will fill the Velocity field values for existing Planning Intervals (if any).
Forecasted Velocity
Forecasted Velocity (for a Planning Interval) represents effort forecasted to be finished in the current and future Planning Intervals based on finished Planning Intervals Velocity.
Forecasted Velocity is calculated as the average Velocity of the last 3 (or less) finished (with End Date < today) Planning Intervals. It is calculated for the current and future Planning Intervals only, so we can later see an Agile Release Train's progress and compare the Forecasted Velocity with the actual Velocity. It's updated for all the future Planning Intervals as soon as a Planning Interval is finished, so we can better predict the future Velocity. If there are no finished Planning Intervals yet, it's equal to the Agile Release Train Initial Velocity.
Example:
- If there are 3 Planning Intervals with total completed Velocity = 3000 points, then Forecasted Velocity = 1000.
- If there are no finished Planning Intervals and Agile Release Train Initial Velocity = 2000, then Forecasted Velocity = 2000 for all the current and future Planning Intervals.
If you started using the solution when there were already finished Planning Intervals in the system, we need to make an initial calculation for the Forecasted Velocity. To do that:
- Go to Automation Rules
- Open Daily calculated velocity for ART (based on EffortCompleted from max last 3 part PIs) Automation Rule
- Click Save and Trigger button
As a result, Forecasted Velocity will be calculated based on the finished Planning Intervals Velocity.
Solution Configuration (optional)
If you call Planning Intervals in a different way, for example, QBRs, then AVG PI Velocity may not make sense for you. The field can be renamed, and the rules need to be adjusted to start using a new custom field for calculations.
Rename AVG PI Velocity field
- Go to Settings -> Custom Fields
- Open AVG PI Velocity field
- Rename it to the needed value, for example, AVG QBR Velocity
Update Automation Rules
- Go to Settings -> Automation Rules
- Update the following rules one by one:
- Daily ART AVG PI Velocity calculation
- Update ART AVG PI Velocity on PI update
- PI Forecasted Velocity from ART AVG PI Velocity or ART Initial Velocity
- Open a rule -> click the Raw JSON button
- Update AverageVelocityField parameter with the new field name
- Save the rule
- Trigger Daily ART AVG PI Velocity calculation rule to calculate AVG QBR Velocity once again.
Update ART and PIs Velocity view
- Open ART and PIs Velocity view in the left menu
- Go to Actions -> Setup View
- Add the (AVG QBR Velocity in our example) renamed field to the ART list
