Solution Overview
The solution allows calculating Work Allocation Cost based on ART estimate in points and an ART Cost per Point. For example, you create a Work Allocation for an ART and estimate it as 200 points. Knowing that an ART Cost per Point is 100 USD, then the Total Allocated Cost for such a Work Allocation will be 200* 100= 20000 USD. Having Work Allocations created for ARTs and estimating them, you can approximately get the forecasted cost of a Portfolio Epic (or any other entity type for which you create Work Allocations).
When a User generates a Work Allocation, they specify the following details: Percentage of an ART involvement, Planned Start Date and Estimated,pt (Points).
By taking into account the Forecasted Velocity and a Percentage of the Agile Release Train, the solution calculates the Planned End Date for the Work Allocation (this represents the date when the ART can complete the Work Allocation, based on the provided parameters), the number of Periods (PIs) it will take, and the Total Allocated Cost of each Work Allocation.
Please note that the number of Periods may differ from the number of Demands created. For example, it mights be that the Planned Start Date is at the end of the current PI, and it's calculated that it'll take 1.5 PIs to complete the work, then it'll be 3 Demands created for 3 PIs which the Work Allocation is going through based on Planned Start and Planned End Dates.
Solution Configuration
Install the precondition solutions
Before installing the solution, please make sure you have the following solutions installed.
- Agile Release Train (ART) Demand and Allocation (5094bc62-d370-47a5-af4c-45d53ce63e68)
- Cost per Point (Agile Release Train) (6821f8d1-e556-4d2f-888d-325077c7ba19)
If you use Budgeting solution, make sure these solutions are configured for the same Period as your Budgeting solution.
Remove Planned End Date from the Work Allocation Quick Add
Before solution installation you need to remove Planned End Date field from the Work Allocation Quick Add.
Update custom fields' Currency
By default, this solution configured to display information in custom fields for Planning Interval, so it'll show Points in Period as, for example, 100 in PI, which means an ART can complete 100 points in a Planning Interval. If you want to change it to work with Team iterations or any other custom Period, please do the following:
- Open Setting - Custom Fields
- Click 'Edit' button for the following fields:
- Points in Period
- Estimated Duration
- Update the Currency field to match your period abbreviation
Process existing Work Allocations
If there were existing Work Allocations, the Total Allocated Cost won't be calculated for them automatically. To calculate it, you need to set the Estimated, pt values for them. Please note, that in this case Planned End Date for those Work Allocations will be recalculated respectively.
